And Why They Might Matter to You
Hello career professionals! I am so happy that I have just renewed my NCOPE (Nationally Certified Online Profile Expert) for LinkedIn this year! And also eager to share some of the latest and greatest. Now, a couple of these you may already know, and some you may not have even paid attention to. This is why it’s important to stay active even when you’re not looking for a job.
Location Type – I think I noticed this towards the end of 2022. With many employees working in all manner of ways now, LinkedIn asks you to select Onsite, Hybrid or Remote for your current and previous jobs.
Why Should This Matter to You?
It can help with filtering for your job search, and for the recruiters who may seek you out. With most people preferring the remote or hybrid model, it’s good to let companies know that you are experienced in the different models. This can be a good topic of conversation too, in that you can discuss how successful you are performing in all models, including onsite.
Industry – This selection has been slashed significantly to align with the NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) standards. You may or may not see this yet, as they started the change three months ago.
Why Does it Matter?
It could affect the industries you’re targeting for your current or future job search. For example, I know career coach used to be a selection, but not anymore. Let’s say you’re an executive coach or a career coach. That is now Professional and Management Development Training. If you don’t check yours to see if it still exists, or if you’ve never even selected an industry, this could reduce the number of job opportunities floating your way. Remember, LinkedIn uses algorithms just like everything else.
Share Your Resume Without Worry – So many clients tell me their employer uses LinkedIn to recruit and they don’t want them to know they’re searching for a job. They either try to disguise the profile by changing company names, providing vague details, don’t add a photo, a resume or they simply don’t even build out their profile. Now with the Share Your Resume Data feature (see Job Application Settings), LinkedIn is alleviating those fears (hopefully). And of course I don’t have to tell you why this matters.
Taken from LinkedIn:
Discover more opportunities and increase your chances of getting hired with LinkedIn’s resume sharing feature. Once enabled, your profile will appear in search results when recruiters search for skills, experiences, education, and accomplishments that match data found in resumes that you’ve saved over the past 2 years. You must have at least one saved resume to enable this feature. Recruiters will not have access to your full resume unless you provide it to them directly, including by applying for a job.
Important to know
To protect your privacy, we take steps to prevent LinkedIn Recruiter users who work at your company and related companies from seeing that you have shared a resume. We take the current company on your LinkedIn profile marked as “I am currently working here” to know who to hide your resume information from, however, we can’t guarantee complete privacy.
After applying for a job on LinkedIn, you’ll be presented with a prompt to share your resume data with all recruiters, and the Share resume data with recruiters’ toggle will be turned on. You can either turn it off from the prompt or the Job Application Settings page.
BONUS – Creator Mode!
Okay, here’s a fourth tip. You know about LinkedIn’s Live Video right? How about audio recording? Many people are aware of both, yet rarely use these features. You can access them from your cell phone. Choose creator mode. Did you know, aside from recording events, the audio recording feature is very useful for sending thank you notes after an interview?
And there you have it! Stay tuned for my next newsletter on other valuable LinkedIn features you may not, yet should be using.
